Yahoo (Mock Interviews)

Transition Year pupils continued their Skills@work programme with YAHOO, with the mock interviews on April 20th. Having previously experienced a work shop in Curriculum Vitae writing, business etiquette and interview tips, the pupils submitted their C.V.'s and went through the interview process at Yahoo's offices in East Point Business Park. All impressed in the interviews, and several were awarded prizes for their efforts.

Amoung the prize winners were: Vivienne Foster, Adam Loughman, and Amy Blackmore.

We look forward to hosting the wrap up session in the study hall on Friday 18th, when the pupils present the staff of YAHOO with several mementos of the programme before being presented with certificates of participation.

Marble Arch Caves Trip May 8th

On Tuesday May 8th, Ms. Weir, Mr. Pender, Ms. Meade & Ms. McGovern accompanied 44 1st, 2nd & 3rd Year students on a day trip to the Marble Arch Caves Geopark in Co. Fermanagh.

Following an early start, the group travelled through Meath, Cavan and eventually arrived at their destination in the rugged Cuilcagh mountains of South-West Fermanagh. Following a short, but informative audio visual information session on the caves, the large group was split in three and each subgroup was led through the underground cave system by a very interesting and well informed tour guide.

There the students learned about the history and discovery of the caves by the famous French speleologist Martel. They also observed a wide range of cave formations, including stalagmites, stalactites and columns.  Some of these are even affectionately named, due to their lifelike resemblance to food like cauliflower, streaky bacon and porridge to name but  a few. Other formations magically took the shape of an elephant, a frog and even the Simpsons!

The highlight of the trip for many was the Moses walk where it appeared the river had been split in two and amazing reflections, similiar to scenes from the Lord of the Rings or the lost land of Atlantis could be viewed.

Overall, both students and staff enjoyed the show caves thoroughly and fun was had by all our budding Geographers!

Green Schools Committee

At the beginning of the school year Ardscoil La Salle, Raheny set up a Green Schools Committee. The student members of the committee include; Amy Blackmore, Brian Dillon, Jack Rock, Jennifer Connolly, Jordan Kearns, and Ryan Mc Sherry. The committee members have been very busy over the past few months attempting to find ways in which the school can reduce its waste. The students have collected information by taking questionnaires, completing waste and litter surveys and completing a waste audit. All the information has been collected and recorded and the school hopes to reduce its waste to landfill by at least 30 percent in the coming school year. We urge all of the students in the school to continue recycling and reducing waste in their own homes in an effort to create a cleaner more sustainable environment for our community.

Easter Egg Hunt

For the past week the junior students in the school have been taking part in class treasure hunts.  The pupils are using their orienteering skills of map-reading, feature recognition, route planning and route following to locate clues around Edenmore park. The successful pupils have been awarded Easter Eggs as prizes. Everyone involved  enjoyed the competition. Well done to all who took part.
