We are in the second year of the CFES programme. CFES is a global leader at helping students become college and career ready. CFES currently supports 25,000 students through partnerships with 200 schools and districts in 30 American states and Ireland. We aim to ultimately ensure that the students get to and through college, ready to enter the workforce. College for Every Student engages every CFES Scholar in high-impact practices that research has shown raise aspirations and develop essential skills including; adaptability, grit, resilience, teamwork, leadership and other key qualities that promote social and educational uplift.

Mentoring

Our third year students worked with students and graduates from universities in Ireland. These CFES Scholar mentors provide a first-hand look at the confidence, attitude and habits it takes to succeed. The mentors supported our 3rd years in filling out a mock CAO form which will result in mock college offers based on their Junior Cert results. Next year these students will also have the opportunity to be mentors for younger students in the school.

Leadership Through Service

CFES Scholars serve others, improve their communities and participate in ongoing leadership development and develop plans to share the benefits of their accomplishments. In the process, they build essential skills to help them succeed in college and in the 21st-century workforce. Our third year scholars not only provided leadership training to all second year students but encouraged all students in the school to be involved in our community improvement project. This year’s community improvement project involved the development of a 21st Century Library and Learning Space within the school environment. Next year’s leadership project will focus on serving the wider Dublin community.

Pathways

CFES Scholars visit college campuses, interact with college students and faculty, and receive instructive exposure to the college admission process, financial aid programs, and other aspects of the higher education experience. Additionally, CFES Scholars get additional career guidance through mentors, role models, internships, job shadowing and other activities. While being supported by our in-school Careers Counselling our second and third years visited the Dublin City University (DCU) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD) campuses. Next year will see visits to UCD and DIT as well as more contact with our local FE colleges.

Moodle

Worldwide Moodle has over 230million users - this includes most Universities, Schools and most Commercial Training institutions. Many people who have done online courses have used it, without knowing that the course was Moodle based. It is a Learning Management System geared towards teaching and learning. Facilities such as VSware are Management Information Systems geared towards the needs of principals the boards of management, and the Department. Google APPS for Education is geared towards document production and storage. The founders have made Moodle FREE to schools.

Moodle is an online learning management system similar to other systems such as Blackboard or WebCT. Chances are that if you have taken an online course in the last five years, it has been run on Moodle. Moodle is used by the majority of the worlds Universities and Schools as well as most adult training companies. Tens of millions of students use it daily. If you are familiar with Facebook, WordPress, webmail or any number of other Internet based networks, Moodle will look quite familiar to you.

The Ardscoil La Salle Moodle site is a place to supplement classroom time with our students, help keep them organized and maintain effective communications with parents. This site is in no way intended to replace the time we spend with students in school; it should be seen as a way to enhance that time in a meaningful way, while introducing our students and parents to the modern model of web- based learning. It is an easy way to provide online support for your childs courses - providing a central space on the web where students and staff can access a set of tools and resources anytime anywhere.

Combined with Google APPS for Education it is a formidable teaching and learning tool. Moodle has in excess of 120 features to aid teaching and learning:

The Moodle can be used to provide the following basic information

  • Attendance in class, the Topic covered in that class and any Issues eg, behaviour that arose
  • Homework and Other Assignments
  • Grades for Assignments and Tests etc
  • Schedules of important course events

The Moodle can be used to provide Teaching Materials

  • Class Notes and Presentations can be made available for download
  • Links to the most appropriate websites for a particular topic
  • Teachers can generate their own online books

Online Assignments

  • Can be done in copies and grades entered after
  • Can be completed by entering text/graphics into the webpage
  • Can be completed by uploading files (probably from Google Apps)

Other Capabilities

  • Feedback on course elements can be given by students
  • Online tests can be set
  • Students can work together on Forums and Wikis
  • Online tutorials

It is expected that Google APPS and Moodle will work hand in hand to enhance the students learning experience - students and teachers can move information between both

Google Apps

We are in the process of setting up “Google Apps for Education” at Ardscoil La Salle for both pupils and teachers. This new system, powered by Google, will provide Gmail to our school, as well as a suite of other Google products such as Google Docs and Google Classroom that will enable us to better communicate, share, and collaborate. It will help students interact with our Moodle eLearning platform. We will be joining over 8 million other pupils and teachers (about 4% of the number using Moodle) that are already using Google Apps at schools around the world.

We have decided to offer Google Apps as it represents an important step towards developing an effective and up to date approach to the new curriculum and learning. These tools will support the high levels of collaboration that are required in today’s classroom to prepare students with communication and collaboration skills for life.

Using a Moodle eLearning platform to organise and direct a students interaction with APPS makes for a powerful teaching and learning tool.

What’s included in Google Apps?

  • Gmail provides email storage with extra security including restricted incoming and outgoing email access. These email communications are monitored and recorded.
  • Google Calendar enables us to create and share school or class calendars with events which can be subscribed to by parents/carers to receive automatic updates.
  • Google Docs lets pupils create and share documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings and forms. This also allows pupils to work together on projects simultaneously.
  • Google Sites makes it easy to collect, share, and publish all types of content in a single website.
  • Google Classroom helps teachers to provide information to students - it is more suitable to primary schools than secondary.

What are the benefits of Google Apps?

  • Ease of access, Pupils can access Google Apps at anytime, anywhere. It is designed to work in any browser (Google Chrome, IE, Firefox etc.) and on any computer. This enables access to your email, calendars, and documents from school or at home.
  • Online storage means that no flash drives (memory sticks etc.) are required with documents and files stored in Google Docs.
  • Students can easily collaborate with students from other classes, buildings, schools, even different countries, working together on group projects.
  • During collaborative work teachers can monitor progress of each child and provide instant written feedback visible to the group or to the individual. This enhances teaching and learning and provides accurate assessment
  • Students can develop an online portfolio of work throughout their years at the school.
  • Through websites, calendars, and email, parents can stay informed about the latest assignments and activities.

Parental Permission

In order to keep you informed and also to comply with data protection legislation and Google’s Terms of Service, we are required to get parental permission before creating accounts for pupils.
Within the ALS Google Apps service:

  • There will be no advertisements.
  • All email communication and comments within collaborative work can be checked if needed.
  • Work uploaded to Google Drive remains the property of the creator, it is not copied or kept by Google if it is removed by the creator.

User Access

Pupils will be shown how to use Google Apps within the Curriculum. Pupils will be provided with unique usernames and passwords. Parents/Carers will be given the same usernames and passwords so that use can be monitored and are encouraged to explore Google Apps with their children by logging in together and accessing their school work stored in Google Apps. Pupils will follow school policies for appropriate use when using Google Apps. The service is an extension of the school’s own network. Pupils know that the school has the right and ability to monitor user accounts for policy and e-safety purposes.

Summary for Parents

Google Apps for Education is an essential part of the curriculum, for all subjects, and pupils without parental permission will be unable to participate in any lessons across the curriculum which use Google Apps. All email communication is archived and the school’s Acceptable Use Policy will be enforced. School staff will monitor the use of Google Apps when pupils are at school.

Parents/Carers are responsible for monitoring their child’s use of applications when accessing Google Apps from home. Pupils are responsible for their own behaviour at all times.
